Handcrafted Shaker oval boxes, carriers, and trays in progress at LeHay’s Shaker Boxes, made by Rob LeHay in Maine

Summer Update from the Workshop

It's been a busy summer here at LeHay’s Shaker Boxes. The shop has been running steadily, and I wanted to share a few updates about what’s happening behind the scenes.

October Batch in Progress

The next batch of Shaker boxes, carriers, and trays is well underway (see photo above). If all goes as planned, about 295 handcrafted pieces will be ready in the first half of October. Many already have homes waiting, but there will be extras available for those keeping an eye out!

Shaker boxes remain as versatile today as they were when the Shakers first made them generations ago — used by needleworkers, collectors, and anyone who appreciates traditional craftsmanship. Each piece is built with locally sourced wood and copper tacks made on original 19th-century machines.

In the Workshop

This summer has also been about keeping the shop prepared for future batches. I spent several weeks cutting and ripping lumber to refill the shelves, since some sizes were running low. Now that everything is cut to length and width, I’ve been running boards through the drum sander in the evenings to build up stock for the cooler months ahead. The lumber processing building isn’t heated, so it’s best to get ahead while I can.

We’ve had a stretch of hot weather here in Maine, and with the dust collector running and water heating for bending bands, the shop has warmed up quickly. I don’t want to rush the summer away, but I must say that I’ll be glad when the cooler days of fall start rolling in!

A Little Time on the Trail

Earlier this year I managed to slip away for some nearby hiking — Mount Katahdin, the 100-Mile Wilderness, and a few shorter sections of the Appalachian Trail here in Maine. Nothing too long, but all close to home and a nice break away from the shop for a bit!

Looking Ahead

I’ll share another update once the October batch is finished and available. Until then, thank you again for your continued support — it’s very much appreciated.
